At its most conservative estimate it will enable 64 times more throughput than Ethereum 1.0, but it is designed to be able to handle several hundred times more data than Ethereum 1.0. Each shard would contain its own independent state, meaning a unique set of account balances and smart contracts.

The Merge is when the beacon chain stops being a separate chain and replaces PoW consensus in Ethereum. Sharding will dramatically improve Ethereum's data handling capabilities by adding 64 parallel chains, each of which will be able to handle the same or more data to what Ethereum can today.
